Trade Fair Market in Asia grew by 3.8% in 2009 according to UFI report
Issued: Tuesday, 22nd June, 2010
June 22, 2010 – Paris/Hong Kong: The trade fair industry in Asia expanded by 3.8% in 2009 despite a very challenging global economic environment according to the sixth edition of UFI’s annual report on the trade fair market in Asia. Net area sold by organisers in Asia reached a total of 14.9 million m2. The research was once again undertaken for UFI, the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry, by Business Strategies Group (BSG) in Hong Kong.
China continues to dominate the exhibition industry in Asia. It is the largest market in the region by any measure: net space sold, industry revenues, number of exhibitions and number of venues. Year-onyear,
net m2 sold in China grew by 6.7% outperforming the regional average of 3.8%. Over 8.1 million m2 were sold in China in 2009 – accounting for almost 55% of 14.9 million m2 sold across Asia. The second largest market, Japan, continued to lose ground to China. The Japanese market was the worst performing market in Asia in 2009 shrinking by 3.9% with 1.9 million m2 sold.
Although China remains the largest market, one much smaller market did grow faster than China last year. Space sold in Macau expanded by 47.5% largely on the back of the resurgence of Macau’s gaming-based economy. It is worth noting that Macau’s growth was from a very low base (i.e. 98,000
m2). Two other markets also performed above the regional average: Malaysia (4.7%) and Korea (3.9%).
Revenues from trade fairs in Asia were mostly flat year-on-year. This can largely be attributed to the
weak global economic environment and to discounts offered by many organisers across the region in an effort to attract more exhibitors. Regional revenues in 2009 were US$3.39 billion (vs. US$3.44 in 2008). China generated revenues of US$1.14 billion accounting for 1/3 of all revenues in Asia last year, followed by Japan at 24% and Hong Kong which now accounts for 10% of total industry revenues in Asia on the back of just 88 exhibitions.
This report provides detailed information on the development of trade fairs and supporting facilities in
15 markets: Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Macau, Malaysia, Pakistan,
Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam. The report also includes detailed analysis on
actual market performance in 2009 as well as forecasts and commentary on key trends in each of those
15 markets.
Vincent Gérard, UFI Managing Director, commented, “While the exhibition industry in the U.S. and Europe struggled to find their feet in 2009, Asia posted another year of substantial growth. As China, Asia’s largest trade fair market, grew by nearly 7% and the regional as a whole grew by 3.8%, it is clear that in 2010 and beyond the global exhibition industry will be looking to Asia for opportunities to grow existing events as well as launch new ones.”
As an added-value service, each UFI member will be entitled to receive a four page executive summary
of the research and to purchase the full report at a substantial discount.
This report has been edited by UFI Asia/Pacific Regional Manager and BSG Managing Director, Mark
Cochrane. He commented, “Asia will continue to provide the key platform of growth for the exhibition industry worldwide. The growth here has been impressive. In 2004, 8.2 million m2 were sold in Asia. Last year, China alone recorded net space sales 8.2 million m2 and over 14.9 million m2 were sold
across the region. By the end of 2010, we expect that figure to reach more than 15.8 million m2.”
UFI is the association of the world's leading tradeshow organisers and exhibition centre operators, as well as the major national and international exhibition associations, and selected partners of the
exhibition industry. UFI's main goal is to represent, promote and support its members and the exhibition industry worldwide.

Trade fair market in Asia grows by 8.7% in 2008 according to UFI report
Issued: Thursday, 30th June, 2009
June 30, 2009 – Paris/Hong Kong: The trade fair industry in Asia expanded by 8.7% in 2008 despite the weakening global economic environment according to the fifth edition of UFI’s annual report on the trade fair market in Asia. Net area sold by organisers in Asia reached a total of 14.3 million m2 The research was once again undertaken for UFI, the global association of the exhibition industry, by Business Strategies Group (BSG) in Hong Kong.
China’s growth continues to outpace the rest of the region. It is the largest market in the region in terms of space sold and industry revenues. Year-on-year, net square metres sold in China grew by 14% outperforming the regional average of 8.7%. Over 7.6 million m2 were sold in China in 2008 – accounting for 53% of 14.3 million m2 sold across Asia. The second largest market, Japan, continues to lose ground to China. The Japanese market shrank by more than 6% last year with 2.0 million m2 sold.
A number of much smaller markets grew faster than China last year. Space sold in Macau expanded by 69% on the back of the opening of the new venue at the Venetian. Taiwan grew by 26% and Vietnam by 24% in terms of square metres sold which was also primarily driven by additional, new capacity in both markets.
Revenues from trade fairs in Asia increased from US$3.25 billion in 2007 to US$3.45 billion last year – an rise of just over 6%, down markedly from the 26% revenue growth recorded in 2007. China outperformed all of the top five largest markets (measured by revenues) by a wide margin posting a 20% increase in revenues for a total of US$1.33 billion.
This report provides detailed information on the development of trade fairs and supporting facilities in 15 markets: China, Hong Kong, Macau, Australia, India, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam. The report also includes analysis on actual market performance in 2008 as well as forecasts and commentary on key trends in each market.
Vincent Gérard, UFI Managing Director, commented, “2008 was another noteworthy year for the exhibition industry in Asia. Despite a challenging economic environment, space sales in the region as a whole grew by close to 9%. Seven different markets posted double digit growth – and of those four grew by more than 20%. Even this difficult year should be no exception with major markets forecast to continue expanding and several exciting new venues coming online by the end of 2009.”
As an added-value service, each UFI member will be entitled to receive a four page executive summary of the research and to purchase the full report at a substantial discount.
The report has again been edited by UFI Asia/Pacific Regional Manager and BSG Principal, Paul Woodward. He commented, “Asia continues to be one of the most vital and exciting exhibition markets in the world. Despite the global economic recession, in 2009 BSG is still forecasting growth in several of the region’s key exhibition markets including China and India. The pace of change here has been nothing short of remarkable. In 2003, there were 101 venues in the region and space sales were just 5.7 million m2. By the end of this year, Asia will be home to 162 venues generating space sales of 14.6 million m2.”

Global Sources moves to consolidate position with large retail buyers
Issued: Monday, 13th March, 2008
Hong Kong, 13th March: Business Strategies Group (BSG), the only consultancy in Asia specialising in B2B media and events, has released a new report profiling Global Sources. 2007 was a good year for Global Sources. Revenues grew by 16% reaching US$182 million. GAAP net income was US$24 million – down 15% from the 2006 figure primarily due to the write down of an
acquisition and increasing non-cash compensation expenses.
The report also notes some key developments in Global Sources' strategy in 2007.
- The company continues to refine its strategic focus on large buyers by holding over 80 private sourcing events and strengthening the supplier verification services that they provide. BSG concludes that the successful execution of this strategy will be a key component of creating differentiation between Global Sources and the more SME focused Alibaba.com.
- In November, Global Sources entered China's online domestic sourcing market with the launch of www.globalsources.com.cn. BSG comments that this will put the company in head-to-head competition with Alibaba.com's Chinese language sourcing site. Alibaba.com has a formidable head start and it will be interesting to see how much traction Global Sources can gain in 2008.
- The report notes that Global Sources is committed to growing its presence in India in 2008. It has said that it will add sales staff, launch new exhibitions there and host private sourcing events which target large retail buyers.
BSG Principal, Paul Woodward, commented “we are expecting another eventful year for Global Sources – one of the most important companies we cover - as they focus resources on building up their presence in India as well as their domestic B2B sourcing service in mainland China. It will also be important to keep a close watch on their efforts to offer deeper supplier verification services which is a key component in their strategy to serve the larger buyer segment and differentiate their company from Alibaba.com.” This BSG report was distributed on 12th March to BSG subscribers of its Asian Business Media Tracker service. The report features over 20 pages of information and analysis covering Global Sources key products, competitors, financial data and a review of the company's overall corporate strategy. Comprehensive report on Alibaba.com comments on market value and competition
Issued: Monday, 5th November, 2007
Hong Kong, 5th November: A report just published in Hong Kong provides unique analysis of Alibaba.com, the divisions of the Alibaba Group to be listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on 6th November. The report has been researched and written by the only consultancy in Asia specializing in B2B media, information and events, Business Strategies Group Ltd. (BSG).
Alibaba.com is the B2B division of the Alibaba Group. When its stocks start trading on the Hong Kong market, it will be valued at some US$8.8 billion – almost five times BSG’s estimated total size of the China B2B media market in 2007. BSG’s estimates the total B2B media marketplace in mainland China including exhibitions, online and magazines in 2006 was US$1.41 billion. This market is growing rapidly at 25 – 30% a year, but despite the strong growth, Alibaba.com’s IPO still values the company at several times the total market size.
BSG Principal, Paul Woodward, commented “there is justifiably a huge amount of interest in Alibaba. It’s an exciting company and combines some of the most interesting aspects of China and the Internet. However, there hasn’t so far been too much effort to place the parts of the company being listed in the context of the market in which they operate. It’s not the general Internet business being listed here, but the B2B media operations. That’s not the same thing and careful comparisons are required”.
The report includes a detailed comparison with Nasdaq-listed Global Sources, Alibaba.com’s most direct competitor among B2B media companies. It also describes possible strategies that BSG’s consulting team believes Alibaba.com will pursue in order to justify the huge valuation given by the market to the company at the time of its IPO.
The report BSG has produced was distributed on 2nd November to subscribers of its Asian Business Media Tracker service. It is also available for purchase on a stand-alone basis.

Highlights include 22.7% year-on-year growth in exhibition space sales across the region, with 33% growth in China, the largest market and 48% growth in Hong Kong, now third largest. The fastest growing country, although still currently relatively small, was Vietnam where sales soared 78%.
The report provides detailed information on the development of exhibitions and supporting facilities in 14 markets: Australia has this year been added to Mainland China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Chinese Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam. The report includes data on actual market performance in 2006 as well as forecasts and commentary on key trends in the market place.
Vincent Gérard, UFI Managing Director, commented, “The second edition of the Asia/Pacific trade fairs report was purchased by even more people than the first edition and has clearly established itself as the authoritative document on our industry in Asia. Research is becoming increasingly important to UFI and its members and it is important that benchmarks such as the data in this report can be set”.
Once again, as an added-value service, each UFI member will be entitled to receive a 6 page executive summary of the research and to purchase the full report at a substantial discount.
The report has again been edited by UFI Asia/Pacific Regional Manager and BSG Principal, Paul Woodward. He commented, “Last year we described the growth in Asia as “solid”. This year, I would have to describe it as remarkable. New opportunities are emerging across the Asia/Pacific and we are seeing some world-class events emerging in the largest markets. The data in this report will allow UFI members and others to plan their business development with a foundation of solid market information”.
UFI, the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry, promotes, serves and represents the trade fair industry worldwide. Via its member organisations, including the world’s leading show organisers and fairground operators, national and international professional associations and industry partners, UFI is present in 76 countries on 6 continents. UFI members are responsible for the management and operation of over 4,500 exhibitions around the world.

BSG
India launched
Issued: Firday, 7th
January, 2005
Business
Strategies Group (BSG) has formed a new operating unit, BSG India.
This will provide a platform for assisting international business
media and business information companies wishing to build their
activities in India. It will also provide assistance to Indian business
media companies wishing to develop their business outside India.
BSG India will be run jointly by BSG Principal Paul Woodward and
media consultant Santosh Goenka in Mumbai, India. The two worked
together in the late 1990s when Woodward was a Director of Miller
Freeman Asia and Goenka ran the Business Publications Division of
Indian Express Newspapers. They have since collaborated on a number
of consulting assignments for major
international clients.
BSG Principal and Founder Paul Woodward commented, “India
has been high on the agenda of many of our clients in the past year
or so. The changing regulatory environment and fast economic growth
mean that all kinds of new opportunities are opening up there. The
market is a challenging one and international companies really need
to know what they’re doing. At the same time, a number of
Indian media companies are beginning to branch out into over-seas
activities for the first time. BSG India will be very well placed
to help them bridge that gap. We are delighted to be working together
with Santosh Goenka again. His wide-ranging industry contacts and
understanding of Indian media issues will be tremendously valuable
to our clients”.
Santosh Goenka commented, “This new venture provides an excellent
route for media companies looking to expand their business in India.
I am very positive about the range of businesses which we can expect
to see coming into this market in the coming months. Linking up
my local industry expertise with BSG’s international clients
and the research methods they have developed will give us tremendous
combined strength”.
BSG India will undertake ad hoc consulting assignments for individualcompanies
and provide advice on partnerships, acquisitions and new product
launches. A special section of BSG’s web site (www.bsgasia.com)
will be developed to provide coverage of India along with a regular
upplement to BSG’s weekly e-newsletter.

10
December, 2005, Paris: The Board of Directors of UFI, the Global

appointment of Business Strategies Group to run its Asia/Pacific
office for an additional two years. BSG's Paul Woodward was appointed
as Regional Manager of UFI's first ever office outside Europe in
January 2004 and will continue in that role until at least the end
of 2006. The office will continue to be based in Hong Kong.
UFI
has experienced a strong surge in membership from Asia in recent
years and this led to the decision to open an office. Since opening
the Asia/Pacific office in January, 22 new members from the region
have joined, an increase of almost exactly 50%.
Speaking
after the Board's decision made at UFI's 71st Congress in Bangkok,
Managing Director Vincent Gerard said, "Asia is the fastest-growing
part of the world for the exhibitions industry. It is very important
that UFI, as the industry's leading international association, is
well represented here. We have been very pleased to work with Paul
Woodward and his team in the past year. It allows us to be much
closer to our members in the Asia/Pacific region and to make sure
that UFI is really representing their needs as well as we can".
Paul Woodward commented, "We have found that UFI already enjoys
a tremendous reputation in Asia. There are many companies interested
in joining and working more closely with UFI and we have been pleased
to be able to help to boost membership in the region. We are very
pleased to have been reappointed for another two years to run the
office and are looking forward to working with the new UFI Asia/Pacific
Chapter Chairman, Mme. Chen Ruo-wei, to develop new activities to
serve our members.
The
office is charged with developing market analysis and strategic
plans for the development of UFI in the region, promoting UFI membership
opportunities and assisting the UFI Asia/Pacific Chapter in its
programme of activities. Michael Duck, UFI Asia/Pacific Chapter
Chairman, stated, "this is a historic event for UFI as the global
association promoting, serving and representing the exhibition industry.
UFI must have a regional office ready to meet the specific needs
of our dynamic industry growth in the area."
Ruud

business intelligence and strategy consulting in the Asia Pacific
region with a specific focus on business media and trade fairs.

it moves forward with new programmes and initiatives in the Asia/Pacific

Big boost in China
trade fairs as print media hit by advertising slow down says new
report
Issued: Tuesday, 15th
October, 2002
HONG
KONG - A new research study has shows that the trade fairs business,
particularly in mainland China, has expanded through the current
period of recession. At the same time, print media has been hit
by the slowdown in advertising spending, particularly for the important
IT and telecoms sector.
The
report, produced by Hong Kong media consultancy, Business Strategies
Group Ltd. is the first update of the its ground-breaking review
of B2B media in southeast Asia and Greater China published first
in 2001. That was the first ever systematic study of the size and
structure of business media in the region. The unique database which
underpins the new report has been completely re-researched to reflect
full year data for 2001 and trends emerging in 2002.
BSG
Principal Paul Woodward says "this new report shows that there is
great resilience in the trade fairs industry even in times of economic
downturn. Volumes have been growing particularly in China as a lot
of new space is added into the market. Prices are another matter
and there is clearly some pressure of profitability in the industry.
At the same time, we're seeing advertising down pretty much across
the board".
"In
this edition, we have refined our methodology and added a number
of new features that our clients have been requesting. We've also
been able to provide year-on-year comparisons for the first time",
Woodward comments.
Two
Hong Kong-based trade fair companies have been listed since the
2001 report was completed so BSG has added an analysis of the performance
of listed B2B media companies active in the region. Hong Kong's
Kenfair trade fair company emerges as the best performing of the
14 listed companies active in the region. As well as companies listed
in Hong Kong and Singapore, this includes international companies
headquartered and listed in the US and UK.
The
report is primarily designed to provide a 'roadmap' to the industry
in Asia: revenues by geography, market and business type, who is
who, key players, trends, geographical spread and industry trends.
The
number one company in the Asian B2B Top 20 rankings remains US IT
publishing giant IDG which has established a very powerful position
in China with long-term investments since the mid-1980s. The highest
local media organisation in second place is the Hong Kong Trade
Development Council with Nasdaq-listed Global Sources in 3rd.
The report is designed for executives working within the media,
investment advisors, private equity firms and analysts who may wish
to cover the industry. It will also be helpful to government planners
who are developing trade fair and convention centre infrastructure
and to those planning B2B on-line media infrastructure developments.

China largest market,
Hong Kong main corporate centre for business media says new report
Issued: Monday, 27th
August, 2001
HONG KONG - A new
research study has shows that mainland China is already the largest
market for business-to-business media in the Greater China/south-east
Asia region. Within the Asian B2B Top 20 rankings in the report
Hong Kong has the highest concentration of headquarters of business
media companies in the region surveyed.
The report, produced
by Hong Kong media consultancy, Business Strategies Group Ltd. is
the first ever systematic study of the size and structure of business
media in the region. It has required six months of original research
to compile.
Paul Woodward of BSG
says "this is the less glamorous end of the media business
and yet for the region we have surveyed it is already a US$1 billion
+ industry. It provides the under-pinning for much of the region's
international trade and it is emerging in China as the one of the
key foundations for new systems of domestic business and distribution".
The report is primarily
designed to provide a 'roadmap' to the industry in Asia: revenues
by geography, market and business type, who is who, key players,
trends, geographical spread and industry trends.
The number one company
in the Asian B2B Top 20 rankings is US IT publishing giant IDG which
has established a very powerful position in China with long-term
investments since the mid-1980s. The highest local media organisation
in second place is Nasdaq-listed Global Sources in 2nd with the
Hong Kong Trade Development Council in 3rd place.
The report is designed
for executives working within the media, investment advisors, private
equity firms and analysts who may wish to cover the industry. It
will also be helpful to government planners who are developing trade
fair and convention centre infrastructure and to those planning
B2B on-line media infrastructure developments.
